Apple Festival

Abbeyleix tidy Towns, together with Abbeyleix Bog Project Ltd and other interested parties is hosting the first Apple Festival in Abbeyleix on Saturday, 17 September 2011 at the Heritage House in Abbeyleix from 14:00 – 17:00 (2-5pm) In essence the following activities:Pressing of apples: People will be invited to bring a bag or more of apples, which will be chopped and pressed on site. Individuals will also be able to fill a bottle with apple juice to take home and make a voluntary contribution towards the Abbeyleix Bog projects.Market/Selling: Any person who has something apple related to sell, i.e. apple tart or crumble, jelly, etc, etc. will be able to do so. A nominal fee will be charged for the stall.
Talks/Demonstrations: Individuals will be asked to do a demonstrations, i.e. Helen Gee on making apple jelly, how to select an apple tree, when where and how to plant apple trees, how to pasteurise apple juice, making of apple cider, etc.
Identification of apple varieties: Public will be invited to register old apple trees or any any varieties that might have become localised.
Exchange of apple recipes and tastings: bring an old favoured recipe about apples and share with other people. If enough interest, the recipes could be published locally.
